Anchors

Mobile Home Anchors: Often called augers, these anchors are specifically designed to secure a mobile home to dirt or soil. They are driven into the ground and provide a strong attachment to the earth. For certified ground installations, mobile home anchors are the only approved option.

Concrete Anchors: Ideal for structures with a concrete base, these anchors expand once installed and should only be used in concrete. If used in asphalt, they may cause cracks in the foundation.

Rebar Anchors: Commonly used for metal building installations, rebar anchors are suitable for gravel or soil foundations. However, they are not recommended for sandy areas. For loose soil, auger anchors are a better choice.

Asphalt Anchors: Specifically designed for securing buildings to asphalt, these anchors are effective without compromising the integrity of the asphalt surface.

How do you know where to place the anchors? No matter which type of anchors you use, they must be positioned correctly to be effective. Certified carports or prefabricated steel buildings come with detailed instructions on where to install the anchors. It's essential to follow these instructions closely to ensure the structure's durability, longevity, and safety.

What type of foundation should the anchors be secured to? Most professional installers of prefabricated steel buildings recommend securing them to a concrete foundation. A skilled concrete engineer can help determine the proper depth for the concrete pour and the required length of steel anchor bolts. These details are important to know in advance, as they will affect site excavation and preparation.

Simple Guideline for Anchor Bolts

Here is a basic overview of anchor bolt requirements for prefabricated steel buildings:

  1. All steel buildings require at least four anchor bolts, though more is preferable for added stability.
  2. Cement or rebar anchors must be installed precisely following the given installation instructions.
  3. Foundation anchor bolts should be placed perpendicular to the foundation surface (at a 90-degree angle).
